Alumnus from India selected for prestigious fellowship

The EUVP proudly presents our inspiring EUVP Alumnus from India, Mr. Kunāl Majumder, who participated in the EUVP programme in 2022. Kunāl Majumder During his programme, some of the major discussion themes of his meetings with interlocutors from the European Parliament and European Commission were news media and democracy.

Mr Majumder serves as the Indian Representative for the Committee to Protect Journalists, documenting and researching press freedom issues and advocating for journalists’ safety. He also advises the Impulse Model Press Lab, supporting reporters covering human trafficking, and has served as visiting faculty at the Mass Communication Research Centre of Jamia Millia Islamia University in New Delhi. 

This year, Majumder has been selected for a prestigious Knight Wallace Fellowship for Journalists at the University of Michigan, USA, where he will explore public policy and the role of the media.

The state of the news media in India and elsewhere, including in Europe, is greatly influenced by economic factors, geopolitical dynamics, and ongoing challenges to democratic values. During his fellowship, Majumder will engage with diverse experts in public policy, democracy, and media studies, exploring ways to advance protections for journalists.

Majumder has held leadership positions in various news organizations, including Tehelka, Indian Express Group, Rajasthan Patrika Group, and Zee Media Corporation. He has been recognized with the UNFPA-Laadli Award for Gender Sensitivity and the Statesman Award for Rural Development. Majumder’s reporting spans politics, business, foreign affairs, human rights, culture, and conflict.
