EUVP Visit Story – Fasika Tadesse

FASIKA TADESSEMy name is Fasika Tadesse, a journalist based in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, with a career spanning back to 2013. Over these years, I have worked for various local and international media outlets, focusing primarily on business, economy, diplomacy, and political affairs in Ethiopia and the African Union (AU). In June 2023, I had the privilege of visiting Brussels, Strasbourg, and Paris as part of the EUVP, after being nominated by the EU Delegation in Ethiopia.

As a journalist, I have always been intrigued by the European Union's journey towards integration, the mechanisms it employs to foster cooperation among member states, and the policies that have contributed to its integration. Understanding the relationship between the EU and the AU has also been a significant area of interest for me.

Having participated in visitors' programs before, I can confidently say that the EUVP program stands out as one of the most enlightening experiences I have had. One aspect of the EUVP program that impressed me the most was its tailored approach. Meetings and visits were customized for each participant, ensuring that the participants gained the maximum benefit from their experience. This unique feature of the program catered to my specific interests and needs, resulting in a more personalized and enriching journey.

The program provided me with a unique opportunity to gain a comprehensive understanding of the EU's institutions and operations, broadening my perspective in the process. Through the program, I delved into the EU's decision-making processes, legislative procedures, and policies. Witnessing the integration of countries within the European Union, despite their diverse cultures, languages, and histories, has left a lasting impression on me.

Moreover, this experience has significantly deepened my knowledge of the complex systems and functions in European Union, European Parliament, and European Commission. Building networks and establishing contacts within these EU organizations during the tour has proven invaluable for my future work as a journalist, offering potential sources and insights for compelling stories.

Additionally, the EUVP program provided participants with free time to explore and discover independently, rather than solely relying on guided activities. This aspect of the program was particularly exciting for individuals like me who enjoy adventure and discovering new things. It allowed me to immerse myself in the local culture, cuisine, and attractions, providing a valuable opportunity to gain a broader perspective.

Engaging with fellow participants during my visit also provided me with a valuable opportunity to understand their countries' situations and professions, enriching my perspective. The networking experience was equally as important as the study tour, allowing me to broaden my understanding.
