Participation in EUVP 2024: A Networking Boost for Independent Investigative Journalism

Sana AdouniRecently, I had the privilege of participating in the European Union Visitors Programme (EUVP), an experience that significantly contributed to my professional development as an independent investigative journalist. Engaging with EU representatives during the Programme, we delved into critical topics such as independent media and gender equality. These discussions not only offered valuable insights but also facilitated the establishment of vital connections for bolstering independent journalism in Tunisia.

Moreover, the opportunity to interact with decision-makers at the European Commission and the European Parliament provided a platform to advocate for journalistic advancement, particularly in challenging environments like the MENA region, including Tunisia. During my EUVP experience I had the pleasure to meet with interlocutors from several of the Commission’s Directorate Generals such as Communication (COMM) and Research and Innovation (RTD). Other interesting figures I met from the EU institutions included a spokesperson for the High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, and a Member of the European Parliament. I also gained valuable insight from perspectives which are external, though linked, to the institutions when I met diplomats from the French Permanent Representation to the EU.

My previous work as a journalist underscores the significance of collaborative efforts between journalists and regulatory bodies in addressing pressing issues. In 2022, my investigative article shedding light on the restrictions faced by single Tunisian women in freezing their eggs earned recognition and prestigious awards, including the "Lina Ben Mhenni" prize bestowed by the European Union’s delegation in Tunisia. These accolades stand as a testament to my commitment to advocating for social justice and amplifying marginalised voices within Tunisia.

Additionally, the same article received acclaim from esteemed organisations such as Amnesty International and Journalists for Human Rights (JHR), both of which honoured it with prestigious prizes. Also, my investigation into Bolt transportation won a prize from the Friedrich Naumann Foundation, emphasising its impact. Notably, this investigation prompted  National Instance for the Protection of Personal Data to take legal action against Bolt, showcasing the tangible outcomes of investigative journalism in addressing societal issues and holding entities accountable.

In conclusion, my participation in the EUVP proved to be a rewarding experience, providing opportunities for networking, gaining insights, and contributing to the advancement of independent journalism in Tunisia.
